Climate Botswana

Botswana has a semi-arid climate that is hot and dry for much of the year, with four distinct seasons. The summer, from november to march,is rainy season, characterised by hot temperatures and episodic, unpredictable thundershowers.Winter, from may to august,is dry and sunny, with warmdays and very cold nights where temperatures can drop below zero, just to mention those two.

Seasonal breakdown

  • Summer(November to March). This is the rainy season, with temperatures frequently reaching over 30 degrees celsius and sometimes up to 44 degrees celsius.
  • winter(May to August),This is the dry season.Days are warm and sunny, often exceeding 20 degrees celsius, but nights and cold, with temperatures sometimes dropping below freezing.
  • Intermediate Seasons(April and October):These months are generally pleasantly warm and mostly dry, with a lower chance of rain.

What to bring

Casual, comfortable clothing is suitable throughout the year. Layers of clothing are most practical for the fluctuating day/night temperatures of Botswana. The most practical items to pack are:

  • Long sleeves, long trousers and closed shoes to help prevent tick and mosquito bites.
  • Light clothing is preferable during the day especially during the summer months e.g t-shirts, shorts.
  • Light, compact raincoat is a good idea for summer.
  • Fleece or sweater and a warm jacket due to colder nights during the winter season.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • Natural earthy or khakhi toned clothes are preferable. ( brightly – colored clothes should be avoided to prevent any undue attention from wild animals).
